Complain about a doctor or GP
You can complain about GP care without it affecting your treatment. There is a clear route, and a separate route if you are worried a professional is not safe to practise.
Write my letter- 1
Raise it with the practice manager
Speak to the practice manager at your GP surgery. Ask for their complaints procedure in writing so you know exactly what to expect.
- 2
Make a formal written complaint
Write to the practice. Set out what happened, the dates, who was involved, and what you want to happen. Keep a copy of everything.
- 3
Ask for a written response and a meeting
They should reply within a set time and offer to talk it through. If the answer does not deal with your points, say so in writing and ask them to look again.
If that does not put it right: The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman
If the practice's response does not put things right, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman can review it. If your concern is that a doctor or nurse is not fit to practise, that goes to the General Medical Council or the Nursing and Midwifery Council instead.
Where this can go next
This is a plain English guide to the usual procedure, not legal advice. Every organisation has its own exact steps and timings, so ask for their complaints policy and follow it.
